Netflix’s romantic comedy TV show Emily in Paris starring Lily Collins is the target of French critics. The TV show that has cliché French stereotypes annoyed French criticism since Paris was reflected as the city of fashion, romanticism and croissant. The TV show created by Darren Star is full of chic clothes, dazzling spaces and incredibly attractive stars. But this glamour did not prevent the TV show to be a target of criticism.
Here is the plot of the TV show: The doors of Paris are opened to Emily who has been working in an American marketing company when her boss gets pregnant and can’t go to the new company orientation that has been purchased in Paris. Emily who does not a single French word starts working to give an American perspective of the company in Paris.
While most French critics and audience found it a bit exaggerated to feel honored with cultural ignorance, they strongly criticized the high cliché and absurd plot to show Paris as a theme park. While one of the critics in The Hollywood Reporter described the TV show as a surprisingly watchable TV show with an easily understood plot, costumes and characters, the critic objected lead character, Emily, as follows, “Emily is a bold, fun and arrogant character. She comes to Paris to bring an American perspective to a French brand but she doesn’t even think that cultural ignorance is not a power but a weakness.”
Charles Martin from Premiere said the following, “The TV show tells us that all French people are bad and lazy, they do not come to work before noon, they constantly flirt, the do not understand loyalty, they are sexist and their relationship with the douche is questionable.”
A critic from Sens Critique said that Emily in Paris portrayed an unrealistic Paris similar to Amelie, the screenplay writers will give a baguette to every French character and French people are portrayed as smoking, flirting people who go to work when they are bored.
RTL said they have never seen such a cliché Paris since Gossip Girl episodes in Paris and Devil Wears Prada and the city is described as the unrealistic city of Moulin Rouge, Coco Chanel, baguette and Ratatouille.
Our French sister website Allocie.fr got 2.9/5 from the audience and most of the criticism is barbed. For example, a user defines the TV show as embarrassing and said the TV show is ridiculous and the acting is bad and another user said, “This could be a great TV show if it did not caricature French people. In this series, French people are arrogant, dirty, lazy and reckless… but thankfully this American young girl is coming to show us how to live life. It is pathetic, I am wondering why French actors accepted to play in this TV show.”
One of the Allocine authors said, “A lot of French are angry against the clichés but we are the people who have a prejudice against others. Calm down, this is just a TV show and there is nothing bad about it. I think it was fun.”
One of the most criticized aspects of the TV show was that Emily becomes an influencer with thousands of followers and likes with simple photos she shares on Instagram.
Netflix romantic comedy Emily in Paris starring Lily Collins is going to run and run since it’s been aired for the first time.
Created by Darren Star and produced by MTV Studios, Emily in Paris was first aired on 2 October on Netflix. The TV shows that tells the story of Emily from Chicago who is hired to increase social media existence of a firm in Paris tries to reflect the American perspective in her job in Paris.
The first season of the TV show is aired and the effects are still visible on social media. How? The TV show tags are used on Instagram, TikTok has videos with Emily’s style and even caricatures related to the TV show are created. On the other hand, Emily in Paris divides the audience into two: those who love the TV show and those who criticize it harshly. The French clichés in the TV shows are accepted but the audience frequently mentions the persuasiveness of these clichés.
Americans Loved the TV Show
The American and French culture conflict in the TV shows continues in the comments. While French people criticized the TV show, American people praise the show.
French fans and critics seem to be disappointed with the TV show, but the TV show is liked in the US so far. While the American critics liked the TV show, other American audiences describe the TV show as easy to watch and stress reliever.
An American editor said: “Emily in Paris is the proof that young people who work in the media and wants to go out must start writing for the TV because there is clearly an audience.
Compared With “Sex and The City”
Emily in Paris screenplay writer team spend time in Paris as a part of their research in this sense, the TV show evaluates Paris from an American perspective. The TV shows that talks about the clichés and Parisians who are not influenced by the clichés with a lovely narrative take the audience to the world of love, croissant and fashion with Paris views. In this sense, Emily in Paris is frequently compared with The Sex and the City and Beverly Hills, 90210 which were also produced by Darren Star. Moreover, Emily’s fashion show fiasco similar to, Sex and the City’s Carrie are among the similarities discussed between these TV shows.
Emily in Paris has the fashion and attraction of Sex and the City but the city is Paris, not New York. Sex and the City TV show made the audience to want to go to New York while Parisians do not think that Paris is reflected right.
“An American Perspective” to Paris
The TV shows tell the French clichés from an American perspective. Emily who arrives from Chicago to Paris starts wearing a beret immediately and she is eating a bagel with cheese in her lunch break. In the TV show, Emily is frequently eating baguette and croissant. On the other hand, there is another cliché that is not always true: Parisians always wear chic clothes, all the women are beautiful and all the men are handsome… In all episodes, her friend Camille, her boss Sylvie and all other women prefer chic and glamorous clothes. Although it is nice to watch these clothes by the audience, this is among the criticized clichés that do not reflect reality. Other clichés in the TV show are Parisians smoking too much, being obsessed with thinness, do not speak English.
Outdated Stereotyped Thoughts
Parisians are extremely happy to describe the city as the center of romanticism. But they also argue that there are outdated stereotypical representations in the TV show. From the first day Emily arrives in the city, she meets handsome French men. The TV show is based on the fact that French men are known as “lovers and romantic”. But overemphasize on this stereotypical thought makes it a bit absurd. Therefore, the TV show loses persuasiveness due to overemphasizing of these stereotypical thoughts.
French Did Not Like the TV Show
French people called the TV show “ridiculous”. Emily’s constantly wearing different heals in every scene and having a budget to change her clothes this frequently, Emily being belittled by her French boss Sylvie Grateau are found “ridiculous” and “absurd”. What is more absurd to the audience is that Emily did not know how to speak French and she relied on a translation app on her smartphone.
French #MeToo Movement: #BalanceTonPorc
There are a lot of scenes in the TV show that made you think about whether they are true. French people say that they are careful about sexist discourse as much as Americans and they react to the scenes that show French as sexists. One of those is as follows: The ad shooting of a thin blond Serbian model across the Alexandre III bridge for a perfume campaign. In the TV show, the model is naked other than the fragrance. Emily who is aware of the #MeToo movement is against the sexism of the campaign. But French perfume brans states that this ad is not sexist but “sexy”.
29-years old Léo Bigiaoui who works in the video sector tells the following for a scene: “This is the parody of nakedness that was used in the ads 20 or 30 years ago.” And he expressed that today such ad style is not trendy and French advertisers will never support such ad video idea.
With French #MeToo movement #BalanceTonPorc, it is known that ad companies work hard to avoid sexist discourse. Florence Coupry, a manager in French strategic communication firms says, “I do not try to sell a perfume by using a video that shows a naked woman who tries to excite men.” She adds, “This is not about being French. Such a campaign will backfire.”
Stargate Origins that narrate the adventures of an archaeologist Paul Langford and his daughter Catherine after finding a stargate in Egypt and want to prevent the Germans to use it was first aired on February 2018. It is hard to believe that this mini-series continues with the plot of the 1994 Stargate starring Kurt Russel and James Spader. The movie had mixed comments when it came out but it created a solid fanbase over the years and gave birth to 4 TV shows, a series of books and video games. What makes Stargate series so special? Space research? Foreign species? Watching the brilliant performance of the actors every week?
You might think you are a fan of the series but do you everything about the series? For example, which materials are in the stargate? Or which Stargate character has a real asteroid dedicated to the character? Here are some facts that will surprise you and make you want to re-watch the TV show…
1- First Movie with A Website
Today, every movie has a website. Some websites air the trailers when they show the behind the scenes of the movies. But how did things work in 1994?
Believe it or not, Stargate is the first movie with an official website. Since it was 1994, there were various photos and written information on the website created by Dean Devlin even though the website didn’t have high-resolution trailers.
2- James Spader Did Not Like the Screenplay
Who would say actors will always feel good about the movies they star in? Sometimes we are all forced to the things we don’t like in our work. For example, Michael Caine who won his second Oscar with The Cider House Rules was not present in the award ceremony when he won his first Oscar with Hannah and Her Sisters. Why? Because he was at the shooting of Jaws: The Revenge which was a bad movie.
We don’t know if something similar happened to James Spader but the famous actor said he didn’t like the screenplay when he first read it. There are some theories about why he accepted to star in this movie. Some say it is for the money and others says Roland Emmerich convinced him when they met.
3- Jaye Davidson Stopped Acting After Stargate
Additionally, Jaye Davidson never thought of acting. Jaye who was discovered in a bar found himself playing the lead role in The Crying Game movie directed by Neil Jordan. Roland Emmerich set his eyes on Davidson when he started working on directing Stargate. Because he wanted to see him as the antagonist of the movie.
Jaye Davidson accepted to star in Stargate for a high figure as 1 million dollars and he found the movie shooting challenging. He quit acting and this might be the main reason. Although he starred in a short movie called The Borghilde Project in 2009, some say he is working in the fashion industry.
4- Favorite of American Air Force
The US will introduce the Space Force which will be the 6th unit of the Air Force in a short time but military science fiction TV show Stargate SG-1 will continue to be the most reliable source…
American Air Force appreciated the TV show for describing them and awarded Richard Dean Anderson who played Jack O’Neill character with “Honorary General” title. Additionally, two Air Force generals played small roles in the show.
5- Movie Director Didn’t Like the TV Show
1994 movie that led to 10 season-long Stargate SG-1 and other TV shows was not praised at the beginning. Moreover, Roger Ebert hated the movie. However, Stargate SG-1 was loved around the world and the TV show had a long life.
But Stargate movie director Roland Emmerich neither liked SG-1 TV show now side TV shows. The characters and TV shows were so different than the original movie that Emmerich thought of making a Stargate trilogy that ignores the TV show. This caused a reaction among TV show fans and the problem was settled by cancelling the project in 2016.
6- Which Materials Are in The Stargate?
The literature has various fictional materials. Thor’s hammer Mjolnir is made from Asgardian metal “uru” and Wolverine’s claws are made from an indestructible metal “adamantium”. Stargates are formed from a very heavy metal “Naquadah”.
Naquadah that is used in the weapons is a quartz-like material that can store energy. Asgard’s ships use Naquadah fusion reactors. Goa’uld weapons have liquid Naquadah. Even Goa’uld’s blood has Naquadah. This metal is named after the Naqada city in Egypt.
7- O’Neil vs. O’Neill
In 1994 Stargate movie, Jack O’Neil character played by Kurt Russell had slight changes when Richard Dean Anderson who joined the Stargate SG-1 team asked for some changes. This change was adding one more “L” to the last name.
Additionally, Anderson asked the O’Neill character in the TV show to be funnier than the movie. While O’Neil is an ordinary soldier following the orders in the movie, O’Neill in the movie is a maverick.
8- Effects
The stargates move to the front and then to the back like waving at the end, they are stationary and look like a pond. How did these effects are done with 1994 technology?
Although computer effects were widely used in Stargate movie and TV show, the pond effect in the movie was done by shooting a tank filled with water with the air gun. Aren’t we all attracted to the wavy effect on the stargate?
9- Where Is the Time Travel?
Incorrect or irrelevant translation of the movie names is a common fact all around the world. For example, Oscar-winner The Crying Game move of Neil Jordan came out in China as “My Girlfriend Has a Penis”. It is really surprising. The same thing happened to Stargate even though it is not that extreme.
Stargate came out in Mexico as Timegate. But there was no time travel in the movie. Naturally, the audience was confused.
10- Stargate Infinity
Not most people know that Stargate has a cartoon. The cartoon show narrates the adventures of Gus Bonner who was the veteran squadron leader who lost his reputation and respect due to a conspiracy of Stargate Commandments and a group of rookie student. Bonner and his team must use the stargates to clear their name. Stargate Infinity was only aired for one season in 2002.
The cartoon show did not have the screenplay writers and producers of Stargate. Therefore, Stargate Infinity is not officially accepted as the part of the mythology. It was highly criticized due to its low budget and bad screenplay.
11- Stargate Broom Cupboard
The command center in Stargate SG-1 TV show is located in 52nd District in Cheyenne Mountain Complex, Colorado in real life. There is a military base in the same location.
When people who joined the Cheyenne Mountain Complex tours asked for the Stargate command center to their guide, the guide showed a door with “Stargate Command Centre” on it. Well, what do you think is there behind the door? A broom cupboard…
12- Wraiths
Wraiths that have approximately 100,000-years old past terrorized all planets in Pegasus Galaxy with vampire cultures in Stargate Atlantis TV show. They can absorb the entire life power of a human with an organ in their right hand. Just like Borg in Star Trek and Zerg race in StarCraft, these living beings move as herds and they are the most malignant aliens you could ever see.
Wraiths can be thought as robotic worker bees taking orders from the Queen. Most of the male Wraiths are played by James Lafazanos and most female Wraiths are played by Andee Frizzell.
13- Play Stargate At Home!
Crysis is a computed game where soldiers fight against aliens and North Koreans. In this game, the soldiers with increased power and speed due to nano clothes fight against an alien species called Ceph and the game is fun because it has an extension that has Stargate theme.
With StarCry extension, the players can enter to Cheyenne Mountain Complex and go on adventures by activating stargates. The players can use Zat’nik’tel against their enemies. This extension has lots of references to Star Wars.
14- Stargate Novels
If you love Stargate series, you should check out the novels! Like numerous novels that continue the TV shows, there are novels written as the continuation of the movie. What is more, Bill McCay wrote 5 novels called Rebellion, Retaliation, Retribution, Reconnaissance and Resistance between 1995 and 1999. Since they are written before SG-1 TV show, the novels and the TV show are not related and the novels are based on the initial movie.
We should also remind that there are tens of novels/comic books for SG-1, Atlantis and Universe TV shows and some TV shows still continue this way. Unfortunately, none of the Stargate novels is translated to the Turkish language.
15- Not an Effect
Most movies use a lot of computer effects but it is always better to use simple effects. For example, in the Inception movie, the explosions in the Parisian cafe around Cobb and Ariadne were created with the air gun.
Do you remember the scene where a submarine surfaces by breaking the ice in Stargate: Continuum movie which is the sequel of Stargate SG-1? Some of you might think that this scene is a computer effect but it is not. USS Alexandria, the US submarine with a nuclear warhead in that scene was, in fact, coming by breaking the ice on the Beaufort Sea. It is nice to know that the Marines also love Stargate TV show as well as the Air Force.
16- Short-Time Record of SG-1
Some TV shows might be cancelled in their first season and some last for life. ER which was a hospital drama lasted for 15 seasons. CSI has been there since 2000 and Law & Order: SVU has been there since 1999.
Has Stargate broken any records? For a short time yes. Stargate was the longest sci-fi TV show aired without any break. 214 episodes were shot in 10 years of life. Dr. Who is one of the longest TV shows with more than 800 episodes but it was not continuous. Today, Supernatural that is aired since 2005 holds this record.
17- Peter DeLuise Signature
For years, Peter DeLuise made unique contributions to cinema and TV sector. You might know him as Police Captain Doug Penhall from 1987 hit show 21 Jump Street or as the son of famous actor Dom DeLuise… Peter started directing after acting and he directed various episodes in Stargate.
DeLuise liked to put his signature on every episode he directed. For example, he played a small part in every episode he directed. Additionally, he has a weird side to add “Penhall” name to every episode he directed.
18- Video Games
Stargate corpus is huge. TV shows which are the most important elements of this corpus are watched by everyone. But how many people read books and playing video games? There have been a few unsuccessful trials (Stargate Worlds and Stargate SG-1: The Alliance) but special games like Stargate SG-1: Unleashed are launched as well.
The game is about our team’s fight against Goa’uld System Lord Sekhmet. What makes this game so special is that the voice over is done by the actors in the show.
19- Apophis At Space
There is a crater in the Moon named after Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan. There is even a spider called Aptostichus angelinajolieae which is named after Angelina Jolie. As you can see, science is not disconnected from popular culture.
Torino scale is a scale that determines the collision risk of celestial objects with Earth. When Asteroid 99942 was discovered in 2004, it got the highest value on the Torino scale and there was a chance for collusion soon. The discoverers of the asteroid David J. Tholen and Roy A. Tucker were huge Stargate fans. In this case, they named the asteroid after Apophis who is the lead antagonist of SG-1 show. Since both cause a treat against the Earth and humanity, we can say this is a right and meaningful decision.

13. By the way, Uhura means “Freedom” in Swahili

Star Trek: The Next Generation is a Star Trek TV show that had great success and great fanbase although the first two seasons were not that successful. This TV show aired 20 years after the Original Series is about the adventures of Enterprise starship crew but the ship is not the same. When the services of Enterprise ship in the Original Series ended, Enterprise-A, Enterprise-B and Enterprise-C ships were built respectively for service and when all of them were destroyed, Enterprise-D ship started service. Star Trek: The Next Generation TV show is on that Enterprise-D ships and tells a story approximately 100 years after the Original Series.
The TV show attracted attention after a weak performance in the first two seasons and it continued the classical Star Trek tradition and narrated independent and different stories in each episode. However, there are sequel episodes as well. Additionally, we can see some of the Enterprise characters from 100 years ago in some of the episodes. Star Trek: The Next Generation consists of a total of 7 seasons and 178 episodes.
Since it is a long TV show, it is hard to sustain a conference. Therefore, writers created independent stories in each episode. The duty of Enterprise-D is again “to discover different worlds, search for new life forms and civilizations and to bravely go to places that no one was ever gone”. Following the classical Star, Trek tradition had cons and pros.
Although it has a simple system, this TV show is considered perfect because it is a good production. It can compete with most of the science fiction shows.
This TV show brought a lot so things to Star Trek universe like Borg, Ferengi, Cardassian races. Klingon Empire which was often the enemy in the Original Series is a strong ally of the United Federation of Planets 100 years later and one of the Enterprise-D crew is from Klingon race. Additionally, the TV show highlights that the universe is infinite, dark and unknown.
One of the important characters of the show is Q. Q whom we have not seen in the previous production is the best example to show how incredibly interesting the universe is. This living being that seems like a God among us humans constantly surprises us from the first episode and it is hard to understand what he is doing. Let’s get to know the Enterprise-D crew in Star Trek: The Next Generation:
Jean-Luc Picard:
Played by Patrick Steward, Jean-Luc Picard is a French-descended Starfleet officer, archaeologist and diplomat who worked in the last two-thirds of the 24th century. The most important points of his career were when he was a captain in USS Stargazer, USS Enterprise-D and later in USS Enterprise-E ships. Picard experienced important things not only on his behalf but also in terms of the Federations‘ future. He contacted 27 different new species including Borg and Ferengi, enabled the Federation to know them and he has been the key contact point for Q Continuity.
William T. Riker:
William Thomas Riker played by Jonathan Frakes has been the 2nd captain of Captain Picard first in Enterprise-D and then in Enterprise-E ships in the 24th century. He had a relationship with captain’s assistant Deanna Troi. In 2379, he became a captain to USS Titan.
Deanna Troi:
Deanna Troi played by Marina Sirtis is a half-human half BetazoidStarfleet officer. Since her mother was a Betazoid,Deanna had her telepathic skills. She was the consultant of Captain Picard on Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E ships. In 2379, she transferred to USS Titan ship.
Beverly Crusher:
Doctor Beverly Crusher played by Gates McFadden was the chief physician in Enterprise-D and then in Enterprise-E ships. (Although the chief physician changed in season 2, Dr. Crusher returned in season 3.) She is a member of Starfleet Surgeons Academy. Her husband Jack Crusher died in an accident in the past and she raised his son Wesley Crusher on her own.
Geordi La Forge:
Geordi La Forge played by LeVar Burton worked as the steersman in the ship at first and after a short while, he became the Chief Engineer and worked as Starfleet officer. Even though he is blind from birth, a visor he wore on his eyes gave him better vision than an ordinary man.He worked as Chief engineer in Enterprise-D and then in Enterprise-E ships.
Data
Data played by Brent Spiner was invented by Dr. Noonian Soong and he was the first android included in the Starfleet. He is just like a human except emotions. But he always wanted to be a human and he constantly imitated humans. In this way, Data showed significant progress in the TV show and the later Star Trek movies.
Worf
Worf played by Michael Dorn is a Starfleet officer from Klingon race. While Klingons were generally enemies in the Original Series, they became allies in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Thanks to Worf, Star Trek audience got lots of information about Klingons and again, they started to like Klingons. Worf who acts as the Security Officer of the ship later transferred to Deep Space 9 station and played an important character in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine TV show.
These good aspects come from the fact that Star Trek: The Next Generation gained earned success among sci-fi production with its perfectly rooted characters, strong philosophy and tasteful episodes. He did great contributions to Star Trek universe and made the fans happy. Star Trek: The Next Generation cast starred in 4 movies released after the TV show (Star Trek 7, 8, 9, 10).
If we do not count the animation series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine which was the 3rd TV show of the universe was aired between 1993-1999 and lasted for 7 seasons. Directed by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, this is the first Star Trek work filmed without Gene Roddenberry after his death and it is highly different than the Star Trek production we are used to. Other than the absence of Roddenberry, the changes in the cast are visible. In 1993, original Star Trek cast was old and they must be retired. Similarly, the cast of 1987 Star Trek: New Generation was getting old and their wages were increasing.
Due to these reasons, the production of the TV show started in 1992 and started under the leadership of Rick Berman and Michael Piller. Since this was going to be the first show without Roddenberry, the production was outside traditional Star Trek concept. While some thought this as a positive thing, others criticized it harshly. The TV show had unusual plots such as conflicts inside the crew, deep political events and long-lasting storyline which Roddenberry avoided. Especially, there were innovations such as the Dominion War which involved thousands of ships and lasted for tens of episodes.
Deep Space 9 is the first Star Trek that does not happen in a starship. In the 3rd season, a starship called USS Defiant was added to the story but the station preserved its primary position. Deep Space 9 is a space station in the orbit of planet Bajor and the TV show narrates the events in this station. The station is, in fact, a base used by Cardassians when they invade Bajor planet. The government formed after the invasion transferred the administration of the station to United Federation of Planets for a temporary period. Previously known as Terak Nor, the station is named as Deep Space 9 after the transfer and a Starfleet commander called Benjamin Sisko is assigned to the station. The basic command echelon of the station has 8 people. When Commander Sisko lost his wife Jennifer Sisko in Wolf 359, he was left alone with his son and he accepted to come here to keep his son away from close contact.
Colonel Kira Nerys is the second most authorized officer and a female Bajoran. Colonel Nerys comes from a conservative family. The colonel is devoted to his religion. He does not accept the commanding of the Federation in the beginning and considered this as a second invasion but his attitude changed. The station strategic operations officer of the station is Worf from Klingon whom we know from Star Trek: The Next Generation TV show. He joined the TV show in season 4. The chief physician of the station is Julian Bashir. Since 2375, Ezri Dax from Trill race has acted as a consultant with first lieutenant rank. Lieutenant Nox from Ferengi race who started his position in 2373 is the officer of the repair station. Again, Senior Sergeant Miles O’Brien whom we know from The Next Generation is the operations chief and Odo from Changeling race is the head security officer. Major Jadzia Dax worked as science officer but was not included in the list because she dies in 2374.
Sisko who thought to enjoy the silence in the Station after the assignments were done under the administration of the Federation discovered the only known stable wormhole in the galaxy in the first episodes and met with the Messenger of Bajorans whom they worship as God for thousands of years. The first season of the series was below average and the 2nd season gave hints that the show will take a different turn. Ferengis have an important role in the TV show. A Ferengi called Quark even has a bar in Deep Space 9. Instead of telling a different adventure in every episode like other Star Trek shows, Deep Space Nine has a long storyline.
While some people say that Star Trek is tainted by this approach, the deep stories were well-written and loved by the audience. Additionally, this series introduced a well-written bad character called Gul Dukat to Star Trek. The rating increased after the 3rd season. Races like Changeling, Vorta and Jem’hadar were included in Star Trek with this TV show. After the Next Generation series is ended, USS Defiant that as added in the 3rd seasons reminds us the old days of Star Trek. But the events on the ship are not as detailed as the other shows but they are as good as them. The TV show had 7 seasons and 173 episodes and especially season 6 and 7 are praised a lot.
The difference of this series from other Star Trek series is that this one handles the background characters really well and guides the show as these characters make major changes. If you skip one episode, you will not understand anything from other episodes. All the storyline is connected except a few episodes and this made it mandatory to watch all episode. One of the best things about this series is that the characters are explained in detail starting from the first episode. Deep Space 9 is known for having religion in the plot which is one of the subjects Roddenberry avoided the most.
When the station commander Benjamin Sisko contacts with wormhole aliens that Bajorans worship for years, he is welcomed as a messenger in Bajor. In the first episodes, Bajoran religious leader Kai gives a speech to Benjamin Sisko which tells us what is going to happen and the things start to shape. Sisko who learned that he was going to help Bajorans to find the Sanctuary at Stars was unwillingly forced to accept this.
The politics which was not involved in the previous series are handled here in deep and dark format. Deep Space 9 that tells how friendship will be destroyed and innocent people will die with interstate plays and relationship of interest has a different position than all other Star Trek shows in this sense. The main plot of the TV show is the desire of Dominion that reached Alpha and Beta quarters of the galaxy with the wormhole to invade this place and the Dominion War. Dominion that has been ruling in the Gamma quarter for thousands of years applied the invasion plan when it saw the potential of the Alpha and Beta quarters. At this point, we can see how politics can be dangerous if used badly.
The dominion that secretly tries to play off against states and races is partially successful. As a result, the war brings destruction and chaos to the entire galaxy. Such that thousands of ships were destroyed and hundreds of thousands and even millions of lives were lost. Star Trek that has a storyline that covers multiple seasons did a great job. Going outside Roddenberry’s concept brought a difference and the show continued for 7 seasons.
When we look back at the end, we can see that this show brought various races and innovations to this universe. Of course, the show has negative aspects as well as positive ones. The greatest plus is that the first-time long storyline is reflected very well. The minus side is that there are lots of soap opera scenes and these scenes sometimes bore the audience. If we summarize everything we have talked about, the TV show exhibit better performance than expected with its new concept. The character development and reflecting that to the screen are detailed and deep. At the same time, it was important references to today’s world in terms of handling political and social events.
Although there are rumors that Gene Roddenberry approved the TV show before he passed away on 24 October 1991, there is no certain information about that.
Star Trek: Enterprise is the 5th TV show of the Star Trek if we do not count the animation series. The TV show was first introduced as Enterprise but the name changed into Star Trek: Enterprise after the 3rd season. The TV show is aired between 2001 and 2005 and the story is between 2121 and 2155 according to Star Trek mythology. It consists of 4 seasons and 97 episodes. The TV show was aired on 26 September 2001 with Broken Bow episode. This show did not follow the 7-season tradition and was terminated on 13 May 2005 with These Are the Voyages episode. The producers are Brannon Braga and Rick Berman whom we know from previous shows the planning of the show started in 2000. It was kept as a secret since 2001 and the name and the content were announced on May 2001.
The end of Star Trek: Voyager series in 2001 was sort of the beginning of a new series. When Voyager aired the final episode in 2001, Enterprise TV show that was kept as a secret was announced under the leadership of Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. On contrary to the previous series, the show was presented as Enterprise without Star Trek but Star Trek was added after the 3rd season. The TV show was aired with great expectations but it has a bad season until season 3 episode 5 and it faced cancellation. The show recovered after the changes by Rick Barman but this late move did not stop the end of the show.
Star Trek: Enterprise crew consists of 7 people. Jonathan Archer is the ship captain from Earth. He is pale beside other Star Trek captains. He is a kind captain. His leadership and diplomacy skills are at the medium level. The 2nd captain of the ship is a female called T’pol from Vulcan. As a classical Vulcan person, her logic is at the center of her life. She was cold to other people of the ship because she was placed as a spy. This changed over time and she became the right hand of Captain Archer. At the same time, she saw the weaknesses of Vulcan people. Phlox is the doctor of the ship and he is from Denobulan race. He doesn’t like touching. He only sleeps 6 days per year.
Malcolm Reed is the tactical officers of the ship. He is timid and introvert and he unwillingly speaks of much when he is under stress. He organized a red alarm system and improved power force technology. Travis Mayweather is the steersman of the ship. He was born on a cargo ship. Hoshi Sato is a communication engineer. He is a language expert. He can solve the language of a foreign race in 1 hour. 2-3 hours is enough for him to learn the language of a species. Charles Tucker is the chief engineer of the ship. His nickname is Trip. He is emotional and sincere. He got his nickname because he is the 3rd Charles Tucker in the family. He has a Texas accent. In the final episode, Hoshi Sato said, “he can’t even talk English”.
Star Trek: Enterprise is about the past, not the future, unlike other TV shows. This TV show takes us to the 22nd century. The Federation is not created in this period. Humans are in their own system under the United Earth flag and at the edge of the system. In 2151, the construction of the NX-Class Enterprise ship is completed and the ship is launched. The greatest property of this ship is that it is the first manmade vehicle that reaches Twist Factor 5. The underdeveloped human technology and inexperience of humans before the Federation have caused fear and terror among humans. But the ships in the other series would bravely be involved in the action as they know that Federation which is the largest powers of the galaxy are behind them.
Here, it has only been 90 years since humanity did the first twist speed flight. Since there is no First Order in this period, humans are checking under every stone. With this series, we get the chance to take a closer look to Federation founder races Tellarites and Andorians. Vulcans, Tellarites and Andorians do not like each other. With this series, we can see how they blend in and the first foundation of the Federation is laid.
The TV show becomes boring in 3 seasons because of an event called the Temporal Cold War. Later, the story was completed rapidly and this damaged the TV show and Star Trek universe. Not seeing familiar and loved races like Klingons and Romulans took this showdown. Fortunately, episodes with these races were included. But this did not prevent the rapidly approaching end. When a new race called Xindi was added to the series that made this mistake, things got out of control and the few fans are gone.
The show focused on short stories in the 4th season and started to what it was supposed to do in the first seasons. While the show gave the desired and seek Star Trek vibe in the 4th season, it wasn’t able to escape the prices it needs to pay because of the mistakes at the beginning. The fans even tried to raise money as the show faced cancellation. But these sacrifices did not prevent the ultimate end.
If we talk about the pros and cons, we end up with the following list: Temporal War is the biggest con of the show. Captain Archer’s dog humiliated the show. Some of the actors look like they do not want to be there. In the original series, Spock said that invisibility technology is only theoretically possible. But here, Enterprise encounters with a ship that can be invisible.
Again, Pon Farr Vulcan sex ritual which is not known by anyone including Dr. Mccoy in the original series is known by everyone here. Archer and his team encountered with Borg and discovered that Omicron particles damage Borg. But the first contact with Borg happened when Enterprise D under the command of Captain Picard went to the other side of the galaxy thanks to Q. In the original series, it was said that sub-space communication was not discovered until 2168. But it is used here frequently.
One of the most important cons is that NCC 1701 is the first Enterprise-named ship according to Star Trek universe. But we can see that the NX-01 is not called Enterprise. The producer says that NCC 1701 is the first Federation ship called Enterprise but NX-01 is the first Earth-made ship called Enterprise. Due to these confusing things, the season was ended in 4 seasons without following the 7-season tradition.
Star Trek that has no other TV show after Enterprise will be back on May 2017 with Discovery TV show according to CBS. As a result, we can see a TV show that has more bad sides than good sides, manages to putt off the best Star Trek fans, has absurd episodes and tries to correct itself by taking the steps at the end which it must have taken in the beginning and fails to do that.
