Bob Dylan Takes Valley Home 1972
November 28, 1974 – John Lennon performed onstage with Elton John at Madison Square Garden
Lennon’s recording of “Whatever Gets You Thru The Night” for his “Walls And Bridges” LP had featured Elton John on harmony vocals and piano, and while in the studio, Elton bet Lennon that the song would become a #1 hit. Lennon, who was the only former Beatle not to have had a chart-topper, was skeptical and promised to appear on stage at one of John’s performances should the record indeed hit #1. “He sang harmony on it and he really did a damn good job,” Lennon told David Sheff in 1980. “So, I sort of halfheartedly promised that if ‘Whatever Gets You Thru the Night’ became #1, which I had no reason to expect, I’d do Madison Square Garden with him. So one day Elton called and said, ‘Remember when you promised…’” It would be the only #1 hit of Lennon’s solo career during his lifetime.

Queen’s Gambit: Things You Need to Know About This Successful TV Show That Breaks Rating Records
The Queen’s Gambit is the TV adaptation of a novel by Walter Tevis in 1983. The adaptation is done by Scott Frank and Allan Scott.
When we talk about the actors of the TV show, the lead actress is 24 years old, young and successful Anya Taylor-Joy whom we know from Split and Glass movies. I need to say that she does her own part perfectly.
Other actors in the TV show are Moses Ingram, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Harry Melling and Jacob Fortune Lloyd. The Queen’s Gambit is a perfect TV show with the cast, shooting and plot.
If we talk about the 7-episode TV show:
The Queen’s Gambit is in the 1950s and 60s. Therefore, the atmosphere and clothes are amazing. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Beth Harmon character in the TV show. Beth loses her mother in a car accident when she was 9 years old and she is placed in an orphanage as she does not talk to her father. When all her traumas are considered, Beth seems like an introvert child. But she transforms into someone else when she discovers her passion. Well, what is Beth’s passion? Chess! Beth who already had mathematics education from her mother is excellent in her class and she is extremely smart. One day when she goes down to the basement, she saw the janitor playing with something. The chessboard attracts her attention at first and she follows this curiosity. She watches the janitor for a while, gets help from the janitor and creates a chessboard on her mind and develops her unique talent. Over time, Beth joins the tournaments and she is known across the country. There are both tragic and dramatic events underlying this success. I am not going to give more spoilers; you will see the rest when you watch the TV show…
On the other hand, The Queen’s Gambit makes the audience question the patriarchal way of those years. Beth who is an opposite character to the female figure of the society of that time makes a difference with her success in the male-dominated field.
The Queen’s Gambit is not based on a real story. But the TV show characters are created inspired by the former chess masters. On the other hand, the authors of the book Walter Tevis gave an interview to The New York Times and said:
“In the 1980s, I started to play chess against my sister and my friends in my neighborhood. At some point, I was graded as C-Class player. My first rewards were 250 dollars.”

21 Surprising Behind the Scenes Facts About New Netflix TV Show the Queen’s Gambit
1. First, Anya Taylor-Joy was included in the cast so early, the screenplay was not even written for the TV show. Creator Scott Frank send the novel of Walter Tevis with the same name and Anya accepted immediately.
2. Actually, The Queen’s Gambit was going to be a movie before it was made a TV show… Before Heath Ledger died, this production was considered as a movie in 2008.
3. Anya didn’t know anything about chess before her role as Beth in this project. And she said that knowing about chess contributed her to be involved in this world.
4. All of the moves before the chess playing scenes are previously prepared by chess consultants Garry Kasparov and Bruce Pandolfini. These two also helped all actors.
5. Scott Frank, creator of the TV show thought of Garry Kasparov to play Borgov but Kasparov declined this offer and only did consulting.
6. All chess scenes on the screen were really played by the actors including the speed chess games.
7. In some scenes where we can only see the actor’s faces, the actors continued to play the game.
8. Anya who plays Beth learned the moves minute before the shooting so that she remembers the chess moves.
9. Anya, Scott Frank and hair designer Daniel Parker decided for Beth to have red hair without even knowing what others think. A wig was used to make Beth’s hair models.
10. Anya did ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, ‘Emma’ and ‘Last Night in Soho’ projects in the same period. She only had 1 day for herself between each project.
11. Benny character in the TV show is created by being inspired by American master chess player Bobby Fischer. Bobby Fischer is known with his “The Game of The Century” win when he won, he was 13 years old.
12. Anya said being a former ballerina helped Beth character. “I had cartographies like bale but I followed them with my fingers on the chessboard.”
13. Additionally, Beth being a female chess player and her stance against her male dominants as we can see on the screen was important for Anya.
14. Moreover, each actor developed their own personal attitude for each character. For example, Thomas Brodie-Sangster decided to constantly play with his ring for Benny role.
15. Costume designer Gabriele Binger is inspired from a chessboard for Beth’s clothes.
16. The inspiration for the chess scene shooting was from Ed Zwick’s “Pawn Sacrifice” movie. Just like in this movie, the audience sees the faces of the actors more than the chessboard.
17. Although most of the story of ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ is in the US, the shooting was completed in Berlin.
18. Additionally, Marielle Heller who plays Alma in the TV show is the director of movies such as ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’, ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ and ‘What the Constitution Means to Me’.
19. Since the chess moves in Beth’s mind that we see on the screen are real, the special effects team learned how to play chess.
20. Numerous women worked behind the scenes; for example, Michelle Tesoro alone undertakes the editing of 7 episodes.
21. Anya is a great Harry Potter fan and she was very happy to see Harry Melling who played Dudley character in “Harry Potter” movies in ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ TV show…
