Despite reports that Toyota will abandon the ‘bZ’ nomenclature, it seems that a new nickname for electric cars has not been chosen. The bZ7, the series production-ready version of a concept unveiled last year, is proof of this. A large sedan aimed at the Chinese market, this vehicle takes on the role of the flagship of the family following the launch of the bZ4X, bZ3, bZ3X and bZ5.
Toyota is keeping tight-lipped about the bZ7. With a body over 5 metres long, it is longer than the Camry and even bigger than Nissan’s China-exclusive electric sedan, the Nissan N7. While Nissan is collaborating with Dongfeng, Toyota is joining forces with GAC to bring this car to life.
Inspired by the design details of globally popular models such as the Prius and Crown, this sedan is characterised by its split headlights and roof-mounted LiDAR sensor. Proving to be more than just an enlarged version of the small and affordable bZ3 that Toyota has been selling in China for several years, the bZ7 is touted as a traditional sedan despite its slightly sloping roofline and relatively short rear section.
Compared to the concept car, the final version features regular mirrors and recessed door handles instead of cameras (actually legal in China). However, the rest of the design has been largely retained and the hidden interior has also been finalised. Looking more luxurious than other bZ models, the bZ7 deserves its flagship role.
White perforated leather on the dashboard and door panels, wood trim, especially on the dashboard, and ambient lighting throughout the cabin. Despite the large centre display, Toyota has been kind enough to add a few physical buttons.
