John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War series, first published in 2005 and consisting of a total of 6 books, is being adapted for the screen. Old Man’s War, which is in a remarkable position among contemporary science fiction series, received nominations for prestigious awards such as Hugo and Nebula with its first book.
Netflix acquired the rights to adapt John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War series in December 2017. At first, it was stated that a movie adaptation would be developed, but since then there has been no sound from the project. Previously, the rights to the series were acquired by Paramount Pictures and the Syfy channel, but the project never went into production.
Old Man’s War Movie Long in Development
Series writer John Scalzi said in a post on Bluesky that development is “continuing slowly but surely”.
Netflix’s movie adaptation is set to be based on the first book of the Old Man’s War series of the same name. The first book tells the story of John Perry, a 75-year-old man who joins the army after visiting his wife’s grave and having his brain uploaded into a young, strong body that can regenerate his limbs, among other things.
The army, called the Colonial Defense Force, accepts only those aged 75 and over. These soldiers are expected to leave Earth, never to return, and fight against aliens to colonize the few other inhabitable planets. If a soldier completes their two-year contract safely, they are rewarded with a home of their own on another planet.
Details such as when filming will start on the Old Man’s War movie adaptation, which actors will take part in the project and when the production will be released are still unclear.
