Jupiter’s Legacy is a new Netflix superhero series based on a comic book of the same name by Mark Millar. As a result of a mysterious discovery, superheroes have superpowers that will save America from the super depression.
- In 2019, Netflix acquired the rights to adapt the Millarworld comics universe, which was launched in 2004 by the famous comics writer Mark Millar. After the broadcasting rights of the universe, which has twenty different series under the Millarworld label, passed to Netflix, the first production to come to the platform was announced as Jupiter’s Legacy.
- Jupiter’s Legacy tells the story of the world’s first superheroes who took their power in the 1930s.
- On September 16, 2019, it was confirmed that DeKnight left the show as showrunner midway through production of the first season due to creative differences.
- In November 2019, it was announced that Sang Kyu Kim was taking over as showrunner after DeKnight left the drama.
- The official trailer for the series features British artist Sam Fender’s “Play God”.
- Director James Gunn told Millar not to make a movie of Jupiter’s Legacy. Jupiter’s Legacy was originally conceived in 2015 as a trilogy film series with Lorenzo di Bonaventura in a production role, but the plan was scrapped at Millar Gunn’s urging. In an interview with Den of Geek, Mark Millar explained that Gunn had told him that comics would “never work as a movie.” Much of Millar’s success comes from listening to those who came before him. Millar told Den of Geek “James Gunn is the smartest man in the world,” so of course he was willing to listen to him.
- The Godfather Part II inspired Jupiter’s Legacy. Most background-heavy TV series take an episode or two to lay out the origin story while delving into the characters’ pasts. But Mark Millar had other ideas for Jupiter’s Legacy. Instead of wasting time on the history of the first superheroes in the Jupiter’s Legacy canon, we watch the historical origins of the Justice League members unravel throughout the series. Shifting between the past and the present, the series dives into its characters’ backgrounds of the Great Depression and tackles their respective pasts when it comes to the present timeline.
- There was an unexpected snowstorm during the shooting of the series. The new script was written within 1 hour instead of letting the snowfall interfere with the footage. Thus, a more realistic atmosphere was created.
- Mark Millar told Deadline that the real-life conflict between Boomers and Millennials in Jupiter’s Legacy inspired conflict between parents and children. The series covers disagreements on everything from morality and ethics to disappointments and judgments about career choices.
- Jupiter’s Legacy has an average rating of 5.48/10 based on 28 critical reviews. The consensus of the website’s critics says, “Despite some truly epic fights, Jupiter’s Legacy is simply too overstuffed and slow-moving to land many narrative punches.” Metacritic gave the series a weighted average score of 45 out of 100. Based on 14 critic reviews. It’s called “mixed or average reviews.”
