The new Netflix series Sweet Tooth focuses on a post-apocalyptic world where a boy, half-human and half deer, seeks a new start with a tough guardian.
- Christian Convery took parkour training to prepare for the role of Gus and has been training for over two years and loves it. He has also read Jeff Lemire’s comic book, which the series is based on, many times. He also did a lot of research on deer and how they move and react to ensure authenticity in his performance.
- The creative team worked with climate change consultants to help design the Sweet Tooth world realistically.
- The team was heavily inspired by Jim Henson and wanted every element of the show to look as practical and handcrafted as possible, including the hybrid puppets. All the baby hybrids shown in Episode 101 are real puppets.
- To turn the young actors into hybrid pups, hair and makeup designer Stefan Knight and his team created tiny, delicate prosthetics that focus on the key physical elements that define each animal. Plus, Gus’ deer ears are practical and his movements were controlled by puppeteer Grant Lehmann via a handheld transmitter.
- Convery and Lehmann would rehearse together to get the ear movement timing just right. Lehmann had to match Convery’s facial expressions during filming so much that he couldn’t just watch her on the monitor due to the 300-millisecond delay. Lehmann had to physically follow Convery while filming to get the ears to respond in a timely manner.
- Gus’s red plaid shirt is a nod to the character’s signature look from the comics. Costume designer Amanda Neale took seven weeks to find the right shirt and searched the world before finding the right pattern and color scheme.
- Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan Downey, are executive producers of Sweet Tooth and chose the story because they wanted “a great co-watching experience for parents and children.”
- The pilot episode was filmed over a year before the rest of the series, and the series creators were concerned that Christian Convery, who plays Gus, would age between episodes. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case.
- There are also references to Lemire’s other works in the series. For example, Essex County Zoo is named after the Essex County comic, and Gideon Place is named after Gideon Falls.
- In the series, orange has been used throughout the series not only to balance the colors of the natural world but also as a symbol of hope.
- The series was shot entirely in New Zealand and was staged at an actual amusement park called Rainbow’s End, Animal Army headquarters.
- Nonso Anozie, who plays Tommy Jepperd, said he really had to fight for the role because so many people wanted it. Anozie took five fighting lessons to prepare for the role and did his own fight scenes on the show.
- Gus is named after Lemire’s son. Lemire wrote the comic while his wife was pregnant with the real Gus.
