December 17, 1995 – A statue of the late Frank Zappa was unveiled in Lithuania

DECEMBER 17, 1995 – A statue of the late Frank Zappa was unveiled in Vilnius, the capital of the Republic Of Lithuania. It had been organized by Zappa fan club President Saulius Pauksty, who’d briefly met Zappa after a 1992 concert in California. He, like a surprising number of young Eastern Europeans, connected with the experimental musician’s style. The way Zappa pushed boundaries in music and in life was inspiring to the culturally adrift youth of the newly “liberated” countries of the former Soviet Bloc. Statues of Marx and Lenin had been torn down, and their plinths stood empty.

DECEMBER 13, 2007 – At Buckingham Palace, Joe Cocker received the OBE (Order of the British Empire) honor from Queen Elizabeth II, presented to him by Prince Charles. Famous for songs including “You Are So Beautiful” and his cover of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” Cocker (May 20, 1944 – December 22, 2014) began his career by singing Ray Charles songs in pubs around his hometown of Sheffield, northern England in the early 1960s.Cocker toured with a string of bands, often playing American airbases in Europe, winning fans among the servicemen. The press hailed his first US television performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1969, and that summer, Cocker played to half a million people at the historic Woodstock rock festival in New York state. The ensuing live album “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” remains a Cocker classic, with songs including “Cry Me A River” and “Feelin’ Alright.” Rolling Stone magazine says Cocker’s “gritty, powerful voice remains one of the most distinctive in rock & roll.” A whirlwind US tour after Woodstock left Cocker “exhausted,” according to his own Web site, and reported drug and alcohol abuse came soon after.

December 16, 1966 The first Jimi Hendrix Experience single “Hey Joe” was released in the UK

In 1962, the song’s writer Billy Roberts registered “Hey Joe” for copyright in the United States. However, diverse credits and claims have led to confusion about the song’s authorship. In late 1965, Los Angeles garage band The Leaves recorded the earliest known commercial version of “Hey Joe” which was released as a single. They re-recorded the song and released it in 1966 as a follow-up single, which became a hit in the US. American singer Tim Rose claimed that “Hey Joe” was a traditional song. No documentary evidence has been forthcoming to support an assertion that “Hey Joe” is a wholly traditional work.

DECEMBER 16, 1907 – The first vocal music performance was broadcast on radio airwaves when Eugenia Farrar, at the Navy Yard in Brooklyn, sang “I Love You Truly.”Born in 1873 or 1874 in Stockholm Sweden as Ada Eugenia von Böös, according to relatives still living in Sweden, Eugenia grew up in a rather privileged family; but after they lost all their money, the 17-year-old and her mother emigrated to the US with nothing but Eugenia’s magical voice.

DECEMBER 16, 1971 Frank Zappa’s film “200 Motels” opened in the UK

DECEMBER 16, 1971 – Frank Zappa’s film “200 Motels” (released in the US on November 10, 1971) opened in the UK at London’s Piccadilly Classic Cinema. The film was cowritten and directed by Frank Zappa and Tony Palmer and starred The Mothers of Invention, and drummers Ringo Starr (made up as a Zappa lookalike) and The Who’s drummer Keith Moon (as the hot nun).the film attempts to portray the craziness of life on the road as a rock musician, and as such consists of a series of unconnected nonsense vignettes interspersed with concert footage of the Mothers of Invention. In the storyline, The Mothers of Invention are on tour and go crazy in the small fictional town of Centerville (“a real nice place to raise your kids up”), wander around, and get beaten up in “Redneck Eats”, a cowboy bar. In a long cartoon interlude bassist “Jeff”, tired of playing what he refers to as “Zappa’s comedy music”, is persuaded by his bad conscience to quit the group, as did his real-life counterpart Jeff Simmons, who was fired for insubordination before the film began shooting. Simmons was replaced by Martin Lickert (who was Ringo’s chauffeur) for the film. Almost every scene is drenched with video special effects (double and triple exposures, solarization, false color, speed changes, etc.) which were innovative in 1971. The film has been dubbed a “surrealistic documentary”.

DECEMBER 10, 1965 18 – year-old David Bowie recorded “Can’t Help Thinking About Me”

DECEMBER 10, 1965 – 18-year-old David Bowie recorded “Can’t Help Thinking About Me” at Pye Studios in London, England, which was later released as a single under the name David Bowie with The Lower Third. It became the first David Bowie record to be released in the US as well as the first time the name “Bowie” appeared under the songwriters credit.

The single was launched with a party at an establishment in Bayswater called The Gaiety Bar, one where John Lennon’s father, Alfred Lennon, was reportedly in attendance, even if his presence was solely remembered for how inebriated he was and for the way he kept asking people, “Do you know who I am?” In the end, the party did precious little good: the song failed to chart in either the UK or the US.

LYRICS:
Question-time that says I brought dishonour
My head’s bowed in shame
It seems that I’ve blackened the family name
Mother says that she can’t stand the neighbours talking
I’ve gotta pack my bags, leave this home, start walking, yeah
I’m guilty
I wish that I was sorry this time
I wish that I could pay for my crime
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me
Remember when we used to go to church on sundays
I lay awake at night, terrified of school on mondays
Oh, but it’s too late now
I wish I was a child again
I wish I felt secure again
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me
As I pass a recreation ground
I remember my friends, always been found and I can’t
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me
Now I leave them all in the never never land
The station seems so cold the ticket’s in my hand
My girl calls my name, hi Dave
Drop in, see around, come back
If you’re this way again
Oh, I’m on my own
I’ve got a long way to go
I hope I make it on my own
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me
I can’t help thinking about me

DECEMBER 10, 1971 – Playing the first of two nights at London’s Rainbow Theatre, in England, Frank Zappa was pushed off stage by a fan’s jealous boyfriend Trevor Howell. Zappa fell onto the concrete-floored orchestra pit – the band thought Zappa had been killed. He suffered serious fractures, head trauma and injuries to his back, leg, and neck, as well as a crushed larynx, which ultimately caused his voice to drop a third after healing. This accident resulted in him using a wheelchair for an extended period, forcing him off the road for over half a year.

A photograph of Dylan with Rabbi Moshe Ben Tov, taken by Dylan’s friend Louie Kemp and published in Kemp’s memoir “Dylan & Me”, shows Dylan with what appears to be a bandage or cast on his left hand. Unfortunately, the photo isn’t dated and Kemp has nothing more to say about it.
