NOVEMBER 16, 1960 – Patsy Cline (September 8, 1932 – March 5, 1963) recorded “I Fall To Pieces” during an afternoon session at the Bradley Film & Recording Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Written by Hank Cochran and Harlan Howard, it was Cline’s first #1 hit on the Country charts, and her second hit single to cross over onto the Pop charts. It was the first of a string of songs written by Cochran and Howard (not always collaborating) for Cline. Howard was the perfect talent to bring onboard for the writing of this song. Bill DeMail quoted Howard’s explanation of his proclivity for complex love songs in his Performing Songwriter obituary. “The toughest songs in the world to write are love songs,” he said. “‘I love you and I will forever and blah blah blah.’ I’d rather get into a song about a relationship that’s a little bit shaky or even tragic. That in my mind represents country music and the drama of the man-woman thing.”
LYRICS:
I fall to pieces
Each time I see you again
I fall to pieces
How can I be just your friend?
You want me to act like we’ve never kissed
You want me to forget (to forget)
Pretend we’ve never met (never met)
And I’ve tried and I’ve tried
But I haven’t yet
You walk by and I fall to pieces
I fall to pieces
Each time someone speaks your name (speaks your name)
I fall to pieces
Time only adds to the flame
You tell me to find someone else to love
Someone who love me too (love me too)
The way you used to do (used to do)
But each time I go out with someone new
You walk by and I fall to pieces
You walk by and I fall to pieces
NOVEMBER 17, 1976 – Olivia Newton-John’s first TV special titled “A Very Special Olivia Newton-John” was broadcast on ABC-TV. It was an opportunity to promote her “Don’t Stop Believin’” album, as well as some of her previous hits. The scripted plot was very clever: Olivia is trying to get guest stars for her special, but things don’t seem to work out her way. Ron Howard and Tom Bosley want to sing, Lee Majors ends up wanting to have his own special, Wonder Woman (Lynda Carter) is too busy fighting crime and corruption, not to mention gossip columnist Rona Barrett criticizing everything about Olivia’s show. Only Elliott Gould goes out of his way to be part of the special, only to end up being very business-like when it comes to contracts.Of course, what makes it so clever is that all these celebrities appear on the show.

NOVEMBER 16, 1969 – Janis Joplin was arrested after a gig in Tampa, Florida at Curtis Hixon Hall after badmouthing a policeman and using vulgar and indecent language. Joplin had became upset after police moved into the hall forcing the fans who wanted to dance to move back to their seats. She refused a plainclothes detective’s order to tell the crowd to return to their seats, saying “I ain’t telling them s***!” and as she left the stage she confronted the detective, calling him an “SOB” and threatening to kick his face in.When a policeman tried to control the crowd with a bullhorn, she allegedly told him, “Don’t f*** with those people! Hey, mister, what’re you so uptight about? Did you buy a $5 ticket?” Joplin was allowed to finish her concert before she was arrested in her dressing room on a charge of publicly using “vulgar and indecent language.” She was later released on $504 bail, and the charges were eventually overturned, with a judge ruling that her statements fell under the realm of free speech.
NOVEMBER 13, 1968 – Rolling Stone Brian Jones purchased “Cotchford Farm” in Sussex, England. “Winnie The Pooh” author A.A. Milne had formerly owned the house, the childhood home of the real Christopher Robin, Milne’s own son. The manor was to become Jones’ final residence, as less than a year later, his lifeless body would be discovered in July 1969 floating face down in the estate’s enormous swimming pool. The pool still remains, as do the panes of colored glass he installed inside the house. A pink fluorescent light tube that he put in one of the bathrooms is still working after all these years. As for Pooh-abilia, there is a statue in the garden of a be-smocked Christopher Robin. There is also a sundial commissioned by Christopher’s mother, Daphne. Frolicking around its base is a whole cavalcade of characters, from Owl to Piglet and Tigger to Kanga. They are still recognizable despite a thick layer of moss. Meanwhile, engraved on the dial itself, is the legend: “This warm and sunny spot belongs to Pooh, And here he wonders what it’s time to do.” As for Christopher Robin Milne, he may have enjoyed an idyllic childhood, but was teased in later life because of his father’s writings. His ongoing antipathy towards his childhood home was confirmed in 1976, when Alastair Johns, a property developer who bought the place in 1970, invited him to come and visit the house during the course of a nearby Teddy Bears’ Picnic event. “We got a most vitriolic letter back,” recalls Alastair. “He said that if we thought he was going to go back on his promise never to set foot across the threshold here again, then we were very much mistaken.”Alastair Johns’ company (Alastair Cresswell Harrow Johns) still owns the deed and is represented by his Edglade Properties Ltd. real estate firm. Here are a few cool links concerning the estate in descending order with the most recent at the top:
NOVEMBER 13, 1990 – Patricia Boughton filed a lawsuit against singer Rod Stewart claiming that a football (soccer in America) he kicked into the crowd during a concert at Pine Knob Music Theatre had ruptured a tendon in her middle finger. And as a result the injury had made sex between her and her husband difficult.
