Trevor Belmont: “Killing you was the point. Living through it was just a luxury.”

SEPTEMBER 6, 1990 – Former Creedence Clearwater Revival guitarist TOM FOGERTY (b. November 9, 1941 in Berkeley, California as Thomas Richard Fogerty) died at age 49 due to complications from AIDS acquired during a blood transfusion.
Tom Fogerty lived comfortably in Scottsdale, Arizona for the remainder of his life, thanks to his Creedence royalties. He was an occasional surprise call-in guest on local radio station KSLX-FM. At the October 1980 reception for Tom’s marriage to Tricia Clapper, all four members of CCR reunited and performed for the first time in a decade. They took the stage once more for a final time at a school reunion three years later. But the brothers sadly grew further apart over the course of the ’80s before Tom died in 1990 of AIDS (specifically from a tuberculosis infection), having contracted HIV from blood transfusions for back ailments. Towards the end of his life, he allegedly said to his brother John, “Saul Zaentz is my best friend.” Zaentz was the chief of Fantasy Records, a man John has described as his “worst enemy” (and who he wrote the scathing “Zaentz Can’t Dance” song about), effectively meaning the two would never mend their relationship. After his death, a music compilation titled “The Very Best of Tom Fogerty” was released.

SEPTEMBER 7, 1978 – The Who drummer KEITH MOON (b. August 23, 1947 in Wembley, England) died from an overdose of Heminevrin (a drug intended to curb alcohol abuse) in a flat owned by songwriter Harry Nilsson, the same room where former Mamas & The Papas singer “Mama” Cass Elliott died four years earlier in Curzon Place in London’s Mayfair.
Police determined that there were 32 clomethiazole pills (trade name Heminevrin) in Moon’s system. Six were digested, sufficient to cause his death; the other 26 were undigested when he died. Max Glatt, an authority on alcoholism, wrote in The Sunday Times that Moon should never have been given the drug. Moon was cremated on September 13, 1978 at Golders Green Crematorium in London, and his ashes were scattered in its Gardens of Remembrance. Moon’s death came shortly after the release of “Who Are You”. On the album cover, he is straddling a chair (to hide his weight gain) with the words “Not to be taken away” printed on the back of the chair.
The band, who soldiered on following Moon’s death until 1982 and has since reunited, is releasing a deluxe version of its rock opera Tommy, which came out in 2013. The reissue contains a new mix of the album, Pete Townshend’s demos and previously unreleased live recordings from the tour supporting the 1969 album.
The “New Book of Rock Lists” ranked Moon #1 on its list of 50 Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Drummers, and he was ranked #2 on the 2011 Rolling Stone Best Drummers of All Time readers’ poll

SEPTEMBER 6, 1995 – Joan Jett sang the National Anthem before the Baltimore Orioles game against the California Angels. The game marked Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr.’s 2,131st consecutive game, breaking the record held by Lou Gehrig. Jett, a huge Orioles fan and friend of Ripken, watched the rest of the game alongside a host of baseball legends that included Willie Mays and Joe DiMaggio.
SEPTEMBER 5, 1976 – During the annual Jerry Lewis Telethon, broadcast on NBC-TV, musical guest Frank Sinatra announced that he’d brought a friend along and produced Dean Martin, Lewis’ former comedy partner, who had not spoken to him since the duo’s dissolution twenty years earlier. The tearful crowd erupted in laughter when Lewis greeted Martin with, “So… you working?”
SEPTEMBER 3, 1970 – Canned Heat musician ALAN WILSON (b. July 4, 1943 as Alan Christie Wilson in Arlington, Massachusetts) was found dead at age 27 on a hillside behind band mate Bob Hite’s Topanga Canyon home in Los Angeles, California. An autopsy identified his manner and cause of death as accidental acute barbiturate intoxication. Wilson reportedly had attempted suicide a few months earlier, attempting to drive his car off a freeway in Los Angeles. He was briefly hospitalized for significant depression, and was released after a few weeks. Although his death is sometimes reported as a suicide, this is not clearly established and he left no note. Wilson’s death came just two weeks before the death of Jimi Hendrix and four weeks before the death of Janis Joplin. Along with his talent and intellect, Wilson had a reputation for social awkwardness and introversion which may have contributed to his depression. Retrospectively, some close to Wilson believe that he may have been on the autism spectrum.

SEPTEMBER 6, 1989 – Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil punched Guns N’ Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin in the face backstage during the MTV Video Music Awards. Neil claimed in a Kerrang! article that he struck Stradlin after he reportedly “messed with” Vince’s mud-wrestler wife Sharise Ruddell at LA’s Cathouse nightclub.
The Guns N’ Roses‘ video “Sweet Child O’ Mine” was up for awards in two categories: Best Group and Best Metal Videos. They ended up winning the latter and, as fate would have it, Motley Crue were tasked with presenting and handing out the award to Duff McKagan and Steven Adler. While the Crue were all smiles and high fives with the Guns N’ Roses rhythm section, Neil was seething internally. At some point in the weeks leading up to the event, when he was on a white-water rafting trip in Idaho, Neil’s wife had gone out to the Cathouse club in Los Angeles where she’d been allegedly assaulted by Stradlin.
SEPTEMBER 3, 2017 – Steely Dan guitarist/bassist WALTER BECKER (b. February 20, 1950 in Queens, New York City as Walter Carl Becker) died at age 67. Becker’s official site announced the death; no cause of death or other details were provided. Becker missed Steely Dan’s Classic East and West concerts in July as he recovered from an unspecified ailment. “Walter’s recovering from a procedure and hopefully he’ll be fine very soon,” his bandmate Donald Fagen told Billboard at the time. Becker’s doctor advised the guitarist not to leave his Maui home for the performances
SEPTEMBER 5, 1970 – Janis Joplin began sessions recording a version of the Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster song “Me and Bobby McGee.” Joplin, (who was a lover and remained a friend of Kristofferson’s from the beginning of her career to her death), changed the sex and a few of the lyrics in her cover. Kristofferson states he did not write this song for her, but the song is associated with her, especially, he has said, in the line “Somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away.”
Joplin died of a drug overdose on October 4th at age 27, and the following March, “Me and Bobby McGee” topped the US singles chart after her death, making the tune only the second posthumous #1 single in US chart history after “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding.
LYRICS:
Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waitin’ for a train
And I’s feelin’ near as faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down, just before it rained
It rode us all the way to New Orleans
I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna
I was playin’ soft while Bobby sang the blues, yeah
Windshield wipers slappin’ time, I was holdin’ Bobby’s hand in mine
We sang every song that driver knew
Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose
Nothin’, don’t mean nothin’ hon’ if it ain’t free, no no
And, feelin’ good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
You know, feelin’ good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGhee
From the Kentucky coal mine to the California sun
There Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Through all kinds of weather, through everything we done
Yeah, Bobby baby kept me from the cold
One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away
He’s lookin’ for that home, and I hope he finds it
But, I’d trade all of my tomorrows, for a single yesterday
To be holdin’ Bobby’s body next to mine
Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose
Nothin’, that’s all that Bobby left me, yeah
But, feelin’ good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
Hey, feelin’ good was good enough for me, mm-hmm
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGhee
La da da
La da da da
La da da da da da da da

SEPTEMBER 3, 1992 – David Bowie became the first person in four years to appear on the cover of Architectural Digest when the magazine published an article about his home on the Island of Mustique. His Indonesian-inspired refuge, built in 1989 on a hillside facing Britannia Bay, was Bowie’s tranquil getaway. “My ambition is to make music so incredibly uncompromised that I will have absolutely no audience left whatsoever and then I’ll be able to spend the entire year on the island,” he said inside the issue. “It’s a whim personified,” said Bowie. “I love a good cliché, and this house for me is just the most delightful cliché.”Jagger, he explains, came to Mustique via Princess Margaret. “Mick had been with that crowd for quite some time. He knew them all through the sixties. The Stones were of course the house band for all the coming-out parties in the sixties. ‘Let’s get the Rolling Stones! Daddy, can we have the Rolling Stones?’ ‘Well, tell them to wash before they come.’ That sort of thing. So he moved in those circles at a very young age… Frankly, it was quite odd. I went down to spend a couple of days with Mick and Jerry in their house, and while waiting for the boat—I was going to take a trip up and down the Caribbean and it never happened because the propeller fell out or something—I was stranded. And I just went scouting one day, having nothing better to do, there being little else to do there, and I came across this area of land attached to Arne Hasselqvist’s. And we talked about it, and I thought, Why not?”

SEPTEMBER 1, 1957 – A 14 year-old Jimi Hendrix attended Elvis Presley’s performance at Seattle, Washington’s Sicks Stadium. The venue was a baseball stadium located in Washington’s Rainier Valley, but since the 1950s had hosted some rock concerts. Elvis, Scotty, Bill, DJ and the Jordanaires performed to a crowd of over 16,000 fans, 90% of them teenage girls. Tickets sold for $1.50, $2.50, and $3.50 and the show was supposed to begin at 8:30 p.m. but it was well past 10 p.m. before a cordon of policemen appeared around the stage and Elvis walked out from the dugout as the crowd began to scream in earnest.
On July26, 1970, Hendrix played the same venue with his father Al and his little sister Janie in attendance. It was to be the last time he would perform in the city (he would die less than two months later on September 18th, 1970). The Stadium was demolished in 1979.
” Lennon wanted my bloody shorts from the Cooper Fight to raise money for peace
We kept up with each other after that and the last I heard from John Lennon was the day he wanted to auction off my bloody boxing shorts – the ones I had worn in the Henry Cooper fight.
I had given them as a souvenir to Michael Abdul Malik, a black militant from Trinidad, who had exchanged them for all the hair on Lennon’s and his wife Yoko’s heads.
The hair and the bloody trunks were auctioned off to raise money to fight for world peace.
I never knew how much my trunks were bought for but Lennon said he was glad to see Henry Cooper’s blood used for a good cause”.
