Kusadasi Coast Secret has captured the attention of archaeologists and history lovers after a remarkable discovery off the shores of Yılancıburnu Cove, one of the most valuable natural and archaeological areas in Kuşadası, Turkey. A marble postament dating back to the Roman Period was recently recovered from the sea, shedding new light on the region’s ancient past.
Historic Discovery Beneath the Waters
The artifact, a Roman-era postament measuring approximately 40 centimeters in height and 37 centimeters in width, was found at a depth of around 1.5 meters along the Yılancıburnu coastline. Located within the borders of Hacıfeyzullah Neighborhood, the area is officially classified as a First-Degree Archaeological Site, making the discovery even more significant.
Due to security concerns and the risk of theft, the marble piece was immediately reported to the Aydın Regional Council for the Protection of Cultural Assets. Following expert evaluation, museum officials carefully removed the artifact from the sea and transported it to the garden of the Aydın Archaeology Museum, where it is now under protection.
An Area Rich in Natural and Cultural Heritage
According to Bahattin Sürücü, President of the Ecosystem Conservation and Nature Lovers Association (EKODOSD), the Kusadasi Coast Secret highlights the immense historical and ecological value of Yılancıburnu Cove. He emphasized that the region has been continuously inhabited from the Late Chalcolithic Age through the Byzantine Period, a fact supported by repeated archaeological findings.
Sürücü pointed out that even without systematic excavations, extremely important artifacts continue to surface. In previous years, natural erosion revealed a Kouros torso, while rescue excavations in 1982 uncovered a Kore statue, which was later transferred to the Ephesus Museum.
Calls for Systematic Excavations
Experts agree that these discoveries are only the beginning. The absence of long-term, planned archaeological excavations means that many structures and artifacts may still lie hidden beneath the soil and sea. Specialists believe that comprehensive excavations could reveal monumental remains and provide deeper insight into the early settlement history of Aydın.
