Student’s Discovery Unveils Hidden 23-Foot Dinosaur Fossil in Wales

A fossil locked away in museum storage for more than a century has been revealed as a giant predator from the Triassic period, thanks to the cutting-edge use of 3D scanning technology. The find not only identifies a new species of theropod but also reshapes what scientists thought they knew about dinosaur evolution in Wales.

Measurements taken from the 3D reconstruction revealed something extraordinary: this dinosaur was between 16 and 23 feet long.

For the Triassic era—over 200 million years ago—this was enormous. Most theropods of that period were considerably smaller. Evans noted that its size places it close to the origins of two major theropod lineages: Coelophysoidea and Averostra, suggesting this creature was a pivotal evolutionary link.

“This fossil shows that large carnivorous dinosaurs were emerging much earlier than we thought,” Evans explained. “It challenges our understanding of what life looked like on Earth during the late Triassic.”


Naming a Forgotten Giant: Newtonsaurus cambrensis

The dinosaur has now been formally named Newtonsaurus cambrensis.
