You’ve probably seen movies with chaotic atmospheres in which the planet is rendered uninhabitable by climate crisis, nuclear war or some other cause. In these remarkable stories, it is often the rich and powerful who manage to survive. Many of us are familiar with the concept of the “doomsday bunker” from these popular culture products. However, doomsday bunkers are not a dystopian movie classic for the rich of modern times, but a real living space!

According to reports in some foreign media outlets, today’s billionaires are spending jaw-dropping amounts of money to build magnificent doomsday bunkers. Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg are among the rich people who plan to retreat to these shelters at some stage of their lives. So much so that according to some claims, the construction of Mark Zuckerberg‘s new 100 million dollar “doomsday castle” is about to be completed! So, what are these doomsday bunkers for? What are today’s billionaires preparing for?

The doomsday bunker is a concept that many of us are familiar with from dystopian movies or works of literature

These interesting shelters are basically designed to help their owners survive in times of potential disaster, such as natural disasters, war and climate crisis. Classic disaster bunkers, on the other hand, are usually built underground and store basic living supplies to help them survive for long periods of time. Of course, many of the apocalyptic bunkers in literature and cinema are owned by the rich and powerful. But for today’s rich, these interesting structures are not a dystopian movie classic, but a real living space!

According to various foreign media reports, some billionaires have already started building doomsday shelters

So much so that the man-made island of Indian Cree near Biscayne Bay in Miami, USA, is known as the “Billionaires’ Sanctuary”. Various shelter companies are building luxury doomsday bunkers for their clients, including indoor swimming pools and bowling alleys.

Jeff Bezos, for example, is known to have bought a luxury apocalyptic bunker some time ago

Jeff Bezos, the owner of Amazon and a permanent member of the list of the richest people in the world, announced that he would move to the apocalyptic bunker he bought for 150 million dollars.

Mark Zuckerberg is in the news with reports that he is building a grandiose apocalyptic bunker

So much so that Zuckerberg is reported to have spent 100 million dollars for this luxury fortress of doom. According to reports in the US press, Zuckerberg’s refuge will be located in Hawaii. On the other hand, the complex named Koolau is almost complete.

The doomsday bunker, also known as Koolau Farm, is said to be one of the most expensive private construction projects in modern history

According to media reports, the complex will include at least 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms, as well as guest houses and a group of 11 ‘disk-shaped’ tree houses connected by rope bridges.

The most striking element of the complex consisting of dozens of different structures is the 460 square meter underground bunker

The structures in this huge living space are connected to the underground bunker by different escape tunnels. Inside this bunker, which has explosion-proof steel doors, there is a large living area and a control room.

Zuckerberg’s castle of doom is designed as a self-sufficient living center

Although Meta’s founder has tried to keep this magnificent sanctuary under wraps, many details have already been made public, even before its construction is complete. Accordingly, Koolau Farm is designed as a self-sufficient living zone. For example, the farm’s food needs will be met from 140 acres of agricultural land. The 16-meter diameter, 6-meter high water tank will be used to meet the water needs of the people in Zuckerberg’s family compound.

So what are the rich people who spend millions of dollars on doomsday shelters preparing for?

In addition to Bezos and Zuckerberg, there are also famous names who have bought or built doomsday shelters. They include athlete Tom Brady, Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and Spanish singer Julio Iglesias. So what are the modern-day rich preparing for? Are they aware of a possible war that we don’t know about, or a climate crisis that is knocking on our door? These questions are not easy to answer. But according to some experts, people like Bezos and Zuckerberg are convinced that the resources on our planet are not enough even now. This is what drives them to build an apocalyptic bunker.
