Built in 18th century Prussia, the Amber Room, a structure decorated with amber panels, gold leaf and mirrors, is known as the 8th wonder of the world.

The Amber Room, the eighth wonder of the world, was an 18th century Prussian structure decorated with amber panels, gold leaf and mirrors.

Considered a masterpiece of baroque art, the room, which forms part of the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo near St. Petersburg, was gifted in 1716 by King Frederick William I of Prussia to Peter the Mad of Russia.

The Amber Room

the amber room remained a cultural treasure until world war ii, when on june 22, 1941, adolf hitler launched operation barbarossa, sending three million german soldiers into the soviet union. the authorities of catherine palace tried to dismantle and hide the amber room, but during the war the room was looted and its contents destroyed.

the fate of the amber chamber has since become one of the greatest mysteries of the art world, and many different theories have been put forward about it. some claim that germany dismantled the chamber and placed it in the city of königsberg (today’s kaliningrad), some claim that the amber could have been loaded onto a ship and found at the bottom of the baltic sea, some claim that it has long since disappeared, or that a second amber chamber actually existed and was hidden. despite extensive searches and investigations, the whereabouts of the amber chamber are still unknown today.

In addition, another strange aspect of the case is the claim that the amber room is cursed, as many people involved with the room have met tragic ends. for example, rohde and his wife died of typhus, who was said to have been the director of the museum that Germany allegedly dismantled the room and moved it to the museum in the city of königsberg. Russian intelligence officer general gusev died in a car accident shortly after talking to a journalist about the amber chamber, and former german soldier and treasure hunter george stein was murdered in a bavarian forest in 1987 while trying to find the amber room.
