Lagina, home of the Carian Moon Goddess Hecate. There are such narratives in Anatolia in the past. We need to tell them to the society in order to raise awareness and open perceptions. Yesterday I wrote a piece about the Hittites, today I will write about Lagina. The place in the image is the gate of the sanctuary. Lagina is the religious center of the Carian city of Stratonikeia. A key-carrying festival was held here every four years. A young girl would hold the key, accompanied by a large group of people, singing hymns, going to Stratonikeia on the sacred road and back again. Thousands of people would flock to the area for the festival and enter the sanctuary through this gate. The temple had lands. These were groves and olive trees. The olive trees were tended by eunuchs. We know these stories from the writings on the side wall of the gate and from ancient sources. The sacred road from Stratonikeia to Lagina, the tombs next to it, the springs, 3 thousand year old tombs were sacrificed to the thermal power plant for coal.
