Bob Dylan – The Home Of Karen Wallace, St. Paul, MN, May 1960 (Complete Karen Wallace Tapes)

Minneapolis/St. Paul, May 1960: a young Bob Dylan, still known as Robert Zimmerman and not yet even 19 years old, decides to drop out of college to move to New York City and pursue a career in folk music. That same month he plays a small gathering at Karen Wallace’s apartment in St. Paul – Karen’s sister, Terri, was an early fan and supporter of Dylan’s – mostly covering American folk and blues standards, which he’d become obsessed with since starting at the University. Still a few years before his self-titled debut, this tape is one of the earliest documents of early Dylan, and since Karen Wallace attempted to sell the tape for $10,000 in the 1970s and subsequently disappeared along with the tape, its life is another great story in the history of Bob Dylan, one of the most enigmatic and idiosyncratic celebrities of the 20th Century.

Bob himself already thought he will become famous. So Karen recorded him for almost an hour, playing classic Woody Guthrie songs (This Land Is Your Land, Pastures Of Plenty) and also some old folk tunes in May 1960 in the Wallace’s home. Now fast forward to the late 1980’s. Karen Wallace, seeing the success Bob earned since, decided to sell the tape for 10 000 dollars, providing some excerpts to possible buyers. At the time, no one decided to look into it, except for Brian Stibal, a well-known early Dylan bootlegger. Karen knew many people would try to bootleg her tape, so when Brian wanted to hear it, she agreed if Stibal will help her do the dishes. He indeed had a tape recorder hidden inside his jacket and it became known as the “Armpit Tape”. This tape is one of the earliest recording of Bob musical career. Nowadays, no one really knows what happened to the original Karen Wallace Tape. Most likely it is still in her possession and decided not to sell it anymore.
