Singer, songwriter, musician producer Gary Wright, who was renowned for “The Dream Weaver,” died at the age of 80 on Monday, September 4, 2023 in his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California. His death was confirmed by his first wife Tina and their sons Justin and Dorian. Justin reported that his father had been battling Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia for the past six years. In a statement shared on social media, musician Stephen Bishop paid tribute to Wright, referring to him as a “dear friend” and highlighting the stories they shared. Singer-songwriter Al Stewart also sent his condolences to Wright’s family.

Gary Wright is an American singer, songwriter, and musician, best known for his hit songs “Dream Weaver” and “Love Is Alive.” He was born on April 26, 1943, in New Jersey, and began his music career in the 1960s as a member of the band Spooky Tooth. Wright released his debut solo album, “Extraction,” in 1970, and went on to release several other successful albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to his music career, Wright is also a spiritual author and teacher.

Wright began his career as a child actor, performing on the show “Captain Video and His Video Rangers” and appearing in several commercials. In 1959, he made his first commercial recording, with Billy Markle. Although he initially pursued a career in medicine, Wright formed the band New York Times in 1966 and was then invited to join Spooky Tooth by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell.

His 1975 album “The Dream Weaver” became a breakthrough hit, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Cash Box singles chart and selling over 2 million copies. He continued to record albums for Warner Bros. until 1981, and he later rejoined Spooky Tooth in 2004. He toured with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band in 2008, 2010 and 2011, and in 2014 he released his autobiography “Dream Weaver: Music, Meditation, and My Friendship with George Harrison.”
