Famous carnivals organized every year are celebrated with the participation of tourists all around the world and these carnivals are among the most important touristic events in these regions.  Millions of people watch the craziest carnivals around the world that continue for days without stopping.  The most famous and craziest carnival around the world is the Rio Carnival which is organized in Rio, the capital of samba.

Everyone must have heard this festival organized in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The world-famous Rio Carnival is organized every year and approximately 2 million people attend to this carnival. The participants of this carnival are the sambo schools in Rio.  Samba carnival instruments are among the most important pieces of this carnival. Millions of people are attracted to the streets with dance and music and the carnival invites everyone for entertainment with its enthusiasm.  The roots of the carnival in Rio dates back to 1723.

Trinidad Carnival is organized every year and celebrated on Monday and Tuesday before the first Wednesday following the Lent which comes before the Easter Day in the Christian belief. This carnival is famous for its participants with colorful clothes, never-ending entertainment and celebrations.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Salvador de Bahia Carnival is the largest carnival around the world. The carnival continues for one week. Approximately 4 million people attend to the carnival and the entire participants can cover 25 km area along the streets, squares and avenues. This carnival is broadcasted in 135 countries with 65 radio stations, 75 magazines, 139 video streamers, 97 newspapers which 21 are international, 14 television channels and 168 websites.

Venice Carnival is organized in Venice, Italy every year. This carnival starts 40 days before the Easter and ends on Tuesday which is the beginning of Lent or first Wednesday of Easter Lent. Every year, approximately 3 million visitors visit Venice to see this carnival. The most important event of this carnival is the best mask contest organized on the last week of the carnival.  In this content, a jury consisting of international costume and fashion designers choose the best mask and costume.

Mardi Grad Carnival organized in New Orleans, Louisiana, the US is among the most famous carnivals around the world. New Orleans Carnival season which is the preparation for Lent in the Christian belief starts on January, 6 which is the 12th night after Christmas.

The carnival has balls, parades and “King Cake” parties and the entertainment starts two weeks before Tuesday which is the beginning of the Lent and continues until the first Wednesday of Lent. Since the carnival is organized in winter, there will be a huge parade every day if there is no rain. The largest and most glamorous carnivals are organized in the last five days. The last week of the carnival is celebrated in New Orleans and surrounding area with small and large events.

Cologne festival is organized in Cologne, Germany every year and this festival starts on 11th November at 11.11. The carnival spirit starts four weeks before the Christmas, stops on Christmas and continues after the New Year. The streets of the city are full of entertainment on Tuesday before the Lent. The people of Cologne went out with their ball clothes during the festival and have fun.

The name of the Munich Fasching Carnival comes from the word “vaschnc” from the Middle Ages. This word means Lent in Christian belief. The carnival has dances and parades with different costumes to reflect the dances and traditions of the past. Until the beginning of the 19th century, these celebrations were always organized in public areas. Fasching Ball which was first organized in 1829 and many other balls were organized in this festival in the following years.

8. Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival

This carnival is celebrated every year in February in Santa Cruz de Tenerife which is the largest and capital of the Canary Islands.  Visitors all around the world go to Santa Cruz to see this carnival.  This carnival known as the second most famous and popular carnival after the Rio Carnival starts on Friday with the opening ceremony of the carnival and continues until the next morning. The highest number of participants can be seen on this day. Hundreds of people with colorful clothes have fun on the streets and the entertainment continues until the first Wednesday before the Lent. On that day, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has a show called “entierro de la sardina” and the carnival ends with this event.

9. Quebec Winter Carnival

Quebec Winter Carnival is celebrated in Quebec, Canada. This carnival is a winter carnival and has different activities such as skiing, snow rafting, ice sculptors and sliding. The carnival is generally organized in February between 1-17 February and numerous parties and balls in open and closed venues are organized during the carnival.

Nice Carnival organized in Nice, French Riviera is one of the largest carnivals around the world with Brazil and Venice carnivals and it is organized in February every year. Every year, over 1 million visitors arrive to Nice for this festival. The carnival continues for two weeks and ends on Tuesday which is the beginning of Lent. This is a colorful carnival with numerous parades, free activities for children and other activities. Nice Carnival was first celebrated in 1294.
