7 September 1838 – Grace Darling became a National hero when she helped rescue survivors from the steamship Forfarshire with her father by rowing a boat to those in trouble when it was deemed too perilous to launch the lifeboat.
The Forfarshire had been caught by a wave and crashed down onto Big Harcar Rock. 9 made it to the ships life boat and nine were stranded on the rocks.
Grace saw this from the lighthouse where her family lived and with her father towed out to them despite the conditions.
Grace then single handedly held the boat steady while her father got the survivors in to the boat.
Grace and her Father became celebrities around the world.
Sadly Grace would pass just four years later from tuberculosis.
