Some interesting and less known facts about The Handmaid’s Tale
1-) In fact, it was originally adapted from a book into a movie in 1990. It is a West German film directed by Volker Schlöndorff starring Natasha Richardson and with other prominent actors such as Faya Dunaway, Robert Duvall and Aidan Quinn.
2-) The decor displayed in clothing actually represents some metaphors in the series. Although the series is a feminist science fiction, it also refers to a Dystopian universe. In a society where qadi rights are restricted, red clothes represent sexuality, menstrual blood and feminine impulses, and are also interpreted as blood, power and rebellion. Blue is a metaphor for “Virgin Mary”, that is, from the Virgin Mary.
3-) One of the most striking is that in the series, women are named by taking the names of the masters they serve. Like Of-Fred, Of-Eric.
4-) In the story, we see red as the color worn only by women classified as ‘handmaids’, and we integrate blue with the wives of the masters they serve.
5-) The most important factor in the fact that it is going with such an intriguing flow is that we constantly go back to the past and understand the characters we know and how we got to the situation we have come to… With every past image we watch, the pieces sitting in the story are presented to us like a puzzle that is gradually formed.
6-) In the face of environmental disasters and falling birth rates, Gilead is ruled by a conservative regime that treats women as state property. Offred is one of the last fertile women left! These servant women, including Offred, are forced into sexual slavery to increase population in this devastated world. Other people who are outside of them and separated by sharp lines between classes may be spies who watch each other and cause punishment.
7-) Amanda Brugel, one of the key actresses in the series, analyzes the themes and plot of “The Handmaid’s Tale” since her childhood. She said she read Atwood’s book when she was 15 and even wrote short stories about a dystopian world.
It is visually inspired by nuclear disasters, the moon, and art to make the color of the colonies more drab. Elisabeth Williams said that while she and her team were developing the Colonies’ aesthetic, she was also inspired by art and world history. Williams also explored different environments, drawing inspiration from images of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Along with it, domes were added to give the “moon feel” to the landscape.
9-) Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale, makes a small but impressive guest appearance in the series. Atwood plays the role of one of the Aunts in the story.
