In spring 2018, AMC introduced us to a new mini-TV show: The Terror. The first season of the psychologic thriller-horror TV show is adapted from the book by Dan Simmons. This book is a semi-real semi-fictional story inspired by mysterious events that are solved in the near past. The two ships Terror and Erebus at the center of the story were found approximately 170 years after they were lost. The research related to this event called Franklin Campaign still continues.
Two Royal Navy ships start their journey from England to discover North-West Waterway passing from the Arctic on May 1845. These were the best navy ships of that time. They are last seen by European whale hunters in the Baffin Bay and they are lost. No one hears about them ever again.
We get involved in this tough journey on September 1846 which is the second winter of the campaign and the crew is forced to fight against freezing cold, limited resources, hunger, diseases that push the limits of their mind and body, never-ending nights, hopelessness and fear against the unknown. The story of a group of sailors trapped and desperate at the other end of the world fighting against nature, themselves and each other is told in The Terror.
Things We Know About Franklin’s Famous North-West Campaign
Yellow line: Planned North West Waterway Route
Redpoint: Baffin Bay (1845 summer) where they were last seen
Green point: Beechey Island where they spend the first winter when the water was covered with ice (1845-46 winter)
Bluepoint: The north end of King William Island where they are trapped on the second winter since the ice was formed earlier (1846-47 winter) (They prefer to sail from the front of King William Island where they should have sailed from the back)
Purple: (South end of King William Island which they would have reached if 1846-47 winter did not arrive early and where the shipwreck is found.)
Before the 1845 Arctic Campaign, 4 years long Antarctica Campaign was carried out between 1839-1843. Lead by James Clark Ross who is mentioned in the TV show a couple of times and with the participation of Sir John Franklin and Francis Crozier, the names of the two volcanoes discovered in this historical famous campaign were given to these two ships. Of course, Antarctica was not as important as the Arctic for the British. The search for North West Waterway in the Arctic dated back to the 16th century. Many explorers attempted it but their search was unsuccessful. What made the Arctic valuable was the increasing trade relationship but challenging transportation between Europe and China. Therefore, they have been looking for a shortcut for a long time. Following the Antarctica Campaign, they followed campaigns to find a waterway in the Arctic. Although Sir John Franklin led some of the recent campaigns, they were not successful.
The Royal Navy consolidated the two warships which were 19 and 32 years old and used in the Antarctica Campaign and commissioned them to the Arctic to find the North West Waterway. These ships were equipped with the most up-to-date tools. They loaded tin cans to keep the meat and foods fresh, boilers to keep the rooms warm, iron plates to keep the ship strong and ice-breaker engines to break even the thickest ice… They were sure that they will succeed this time.
