Here are 15 reasons to place Rick & Morty at the top of your ‘to watch’ list.
1. Extreme creativity
The creators of the series have created a universe in which they can process science, comedy, philosophy, the universe, dark comedy, family relationships, or rather, every subject you can think of in every form. Their scenario, upon which everything can be added, provides the perfect basis for creating interesting stories.
2. Rick the ever-drunken genius
Rick, the scientist, is actually more of a character than a genius. There’s almost nothing he doesn’t know about the universe. With a portal gun, he can go anywhere in the universe. It may sound a bit like Doctor Who, but it’s very different as a character. First of all, Rick is always drunk. Maybe that’s why most of his experiments go to hell. He also constantly convinces his grandson Morty to accompany him on extremely dangerous missions.
3. Tense and anxious grandson Morty
Morty is a bit of a nervous and low-self-esteem character. He’s a bit of a loser compared to his grandfather’s carelessness and intelligence. That’s actually what makes us love Morty. The presence of such a character alongside a drunken grandfather who leaps from universe to universe adds a whole different kind of humor to the series.
4. Interesting parallel universes
Parallel universes of infinite variety, whether similar to our world or not, are one of the most important issues in the series. In one episode, Rick and Morty bury their dead bodies in the garden of their own home when they see themselves dead in the parallel world they went to. It may sound a little complicated, but it’ll all be clearer when you watch it.
5. A weirder series than you might imagine
The family’s pet dog begins to think like a human and makes the family his slave in one episode. At the time, Rick and Morty haunt Morty’s math teacher’s dream (filled with Inception references), looking for a way to get high marks from math. Don’t worry about spoilers, because when you start watching the show, it’s going to be a drop in the ocean.
6. Like Back to the Future but completely different
The series also has sides in common with the film “Back To The Future.” An elderly and insane scientist, his young sidekick (Marty and Morty) accompanying him, and the journey to parallel times. But Back To The Future remains somewhat genteel alongside Rick & Morty. After all, while Rick can be an alcoholic and sometimes a complete jerk, Morty is a bit of a dork.
7. Appeals to Futurama, The Simpsons, and Community lovers
One of the creators of the series is Dan Harmon, who is also the creator of the Community. Those who know the community can guess how high-quality humor can be here, too. Dan Harmon describes the series as something between The Simpsons and Futurama. What do we think? It’s even more than that.
8. Outstanding political references
There’s a lot of political references in addition to the humor. The series, which deals with the many problems we have in the world in parallel universes in different ways, does not stop criticizing the system and humanity. Or do you still not know the real reason why Pluto was removed as a planet?
9. Social messages
Although it does not worry about giving social messages in every episode (which is a correct choice), the audience feels like being slapped with the messages given occasionally. Rick, for example, tells him in a tense moment of Morty: “No one exists for a purpose, no one belongs anywhere, everyone will die eventually. Come watch TV.”
10. Dark issues
The series sometimes has content that can make you uncomfortable. For example, in one episode, the character Mr. Jellybean (bean-shaped jelly candy) tries to rape Morty. Although he survives the incident, Morty does not tell anyone about it.
11. Emotional moments are just as striking as humor
Rick & Morty, which is mostly comedy, also embraces emotional moments when necessary. But it does this so well that you can’t criticize it, saying, “We were laughing so well, what’s this tearful scene?”
12. You may understand some scenes later on
The rhythm of the fiction and script in the series is so dynamic that after the episode is over, you can find yourself grinning at the screen with a “what just happened” look. In fact, if you try to watch something else after that, you’re probably bored.
13. Do you like references? You’re at the right address!
Most of the episodes have full references to series, movies, and books. If you like chit chat about the things you love, we suggest you start as soon as possible.
14. Each episode handles a different topic
After watching the series, you’ll probably love it and immediately start recommend it to your friends. But don’t worry, you can open any episode you like and make your friend watch it. All they need to know is that Rick and Morty are absurd characters.
15. Crazy variety of characters
You know, when it comes to interdimensional travel, it’s inevitable that there will be different characters.
