JULY 27, 1968 – “Mama” Cass Elliot (September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974) released “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” her first solo single following the break up of The Mamas and Papas, released by Dunhill Records though it had originally been released on the album “The Papas & the Mamas Presented By The Mamas and the Papas” earlier that year. The song, with music by Fabian Andre & Wilbur Schwandt and lyrics by Gus Kahn, had been around since 1931 and had been recorded by Ozzie Nelson, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Barbara Carroll, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Joni James, Frankie Laine, Dean Martin, and more than 60 other versions exist, but Cass’ version was the most successful when it peaked at #12 on the US singles chart, and #11 in the UK. It also became a hit in Australia (#1), Ireland (#13), and South Africa (#8). A slightly different version of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” was included on Elliot’s solo debut album, also titled”Dream a Little Dream” which was released on October 19th.

LYRICS:

Stars shining bright above youNight breezes seem to whisper, “I love you”Birds singin’ in the sycamore treeDream a little dream of meSay “nighty-night” and kiss meJust hold me tight and tell me you’ll miss meWhile I’m alone and blue as can beDream a little dream of meStars fading, but I linger on, dearStill craving your kissI’m longing to linger til dawn, dearJust saying thisSweet dreams til sun beams find youSweet dreams that leave our worries behind youBut in your dreams, whatever they beDream a little dream of meStars fading, but I linger on, dearStill craving your kissI’m longing to linger til dawn, dearJust saying thisSweet dreams til sun beams find youSweet dreams that leave our worries far behind youBut in your dreams, whatever they beDream a little dream of me
