“In early November of 1961, we apparently were working on a plan to meet up in southern Vermont during a period when I was rehearsing for my role as an Elizabethan prostitute in a one-act play on campus. I wrote Suze to enumerate some details about thepotential visit: “i secured a ride to and from bennington on friday, dec. 1. that means that i can come to see bob’s concert and that if you two wish to return with me to goddard for the weekend” This is from Susan Green’s eulogy for Suze Rotolo – which I posted here the other day but now can’t find the link, so here it is again : http://www.criticsatlarge.ca/2011/03/fifty-two-years-and-countless-cats-good.html

From Tricia Jungwirth’s post in the Café, 2011:
“Bob Dylan twice played Bennington College in the early 60’s. His first performance there was in 1961 when he opened for Rev. Gary Davis. The story goes that when Dylan heard that Davis was only getting paid $75 for the show, he told the promoter to give Davis half of his own $50 performance fee. Dylan said Davis should never play for less than $100. Dylan returned to Bennington College in 1963 shortly after The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan had been released. While on campus, Dylan shared the lyrics for the yet-to-be-released “The Times They Are A-Changin'” with the school’s literary journal, Silo. Silo then printed the lyrics which became the first known published appearance of the song.
Note that the handwritten lyrics are signed “me Bob Dylan”.”
As I recall, Dylan was on the Bennington College campus and per request, wrote out the lyrics to “Changin'” for Ann Waldman who was attending the college at that time.

we learned that Dylan (opening for Rev. Gary Davis) was at Bennington College (Vermont) on December 1, 1961.
Other events during 1961 where Dylan and Rev. Gary Davis were known to be part of a larger performing bill:
Riverside Church, Hootenanny Special
New York City – July 29, 1961Indian Neck Folk Festival
Montowese Hotel, Branford, CT – May 6, 1961
A little more infor here from “Earl Crabb” – possibly the origin of the shared paycheck story? You’d have to remember the 50s to get a smile out of someone driving a Simca :
I first ran into him at Indian Neck in May, ’61. At the same festival
was Bob Neuwirth, (later one of Dylan’s “bodyguards”, along with Geno
Foreman, according to the news reports of the time). We didn’t talk
much then, but I did make some tapes of some Guthrie songs Dylan was
doing. Gary Davis was also at that festival.
Earl Crabb is one half of the author of Humbead’s Revised Map of the World (it’s in Eric Von Schmidt and Jim Rooney’s book with a description of it’s birth in San Francisco in 1967).
